Why can't I ski anymore?

David | October 21, 2010 | 5:07 pm

I’m now 35 years old. I started skiing when I was about 16. I have skiied in Quebec, New England, the Poconos, WV, and the mountains of NC. My last ski trip before now was 1998. My husband and I came to Utah to visit family and go skiing in Park City. I’m so bummed! I rented skis and the instant I put the boots on, I feel like my quad and calf muscles are under stress (like the wall-sit exercise where your legs start shaking after a while). I skied for about an hour and ended up having to stop every 500 ft or so and the pain in my legs was so intense! I gave up after 3 hours and can barely walk the day after (everyone else went back out today). I used to LOVE skiing, but it just wasn’t enjoyable anymore. I could get NO relief from the pain – even when I stopped. I had to lay on the mountain and get off my feet for any relief. Am I just out of shape (I do exercise, but post-baby am 20 lbs heavier)? Is it a new boot design? Are they they that much different now? Any ideas?

School Ski Trip Nerves?

David | August 13, 2010 | 9:49 pm

I am going with my school on a ski trip, and I am scared that I will embarrass myself in front of everyone, or get injured.

Everyone is expecting me to be a good skier, because I have been before, but I have forgotten everything. I am scared I will be rubbish on the first day, and be put in the bottom group. Then I will be bored the whole week learning from scratch!

Do you know any balance exercises or anything I could do to get fitter or more prepared. I am such a scaredy-cat, but I still want to have fun. Maybe if I felt more confidant about my ability I wouldn’t panic so much.

Do you have any tips that I could use?

I don’t want to dread my holiday, but it comes natural to me.

xoxo

Thank you

Motivation to do exercises?

David | June 8, 2010 | 2:34 am

Last year I went on the school ski trip and got into a routine of exercises and work-outs several months before the trip. I’m going again this year and I keep trying to get back into the routine of exercising but I can’t seem to keep motivated. I’ll exercise for a set amount of time each day for about a week and then I’ll end up forgetting or not bothering.

Does anyone have any ideas that can help motivate me to get back into my routine? (Constructive ideas, not stupid ones, please) :)

What are some really good exercises/ sports to prepare your body for intense skiing?

David | March 18, 2010 | 2:41 pm

Lets say your in relatively good shape but you want to boost your exercises up a notch to prepare it for an intense ski trip. What type of cardiovascular/ weight exercises should you do to prepare your body and especially the muscles you use to turn you body and to make ski jumps, paying particular attention to the muscles you use to ski so that you don’t feel pain after skiing from not using those muscles.
